Curriculum and instruction throughout Ava R-I School District is designed to increase student achievement and ensure that all students become successful, productive citizens. Curriculum development provides one of the most effective means of improving the quality of instructional programs and is adjusted to meet the needs of the students as well as the expectations of the community.
Elementary curriculum (K-6) put emphasis on mastery of basic skills in reading, math, science, social studies, communication arts, health, art, music and physical education. Lessons are also provided to develop social skills, positive character traits and drug-abuse resistance skills. Students are also exposed to technology through an enrichment lab experience. A specialized curriculum is offered to challenge our academically gifted students and support those needing special education services.
Middle school curriculum and supporting activities (7-8) are designed to help students enter their teen years with success and confidence. The required curriculum includes courses in reading, communication arts, social studies, science, mathematics, physical education, health, and keyboarding. Students also receive lessons on character education and drug-abuse resistance skills as well decision making and goal setting skills. Elective classes are available in art, music, industrial technology, computer application, band, foreign language and family and consumer sciences. In addition, a special curriculum is offered to challenge our academically gifted students and support those students needing special education services.
Over 110 courses are available at Ava High Schools. Courses available include the areas of communication arts, mathematics, science, social studies, agriculture sciences, industrial technology, family and consumer sciences, foreign languages, computer application, business education, journalism and video production, technology, physical education and health, speech and drama, driver’s education, band, and choir. Academically challenging courses are available through the honors classes and dual-credit courses. Lessons are offered on positive character traits and drug-abuse resistance skills. Full special education services are available for students with disabilities.
